Livelihood Program

Overview

The Livelihood Program supports household resilience by combining food security, practical skills development, and local economic activities. BHDF treats livelihood support as part of health protection because unstable income and food access directly impact family wellbeing.

The program is designed for communities facing displacement, limited market access, and constrained agricultural inputs. Activities are selected with local leaders to match context and seasonal needs.

Program Areas

  • Agricultural training for soil care, crop planning, and safer inputs
  • Poultry and livestock support to strengthen household nutrition
  • Skills development for small-scale income generation activities
  • Community learning exchanges on practical livelihood solutions
  • Basic planning support for household and group-based initiatives

Health and Household Resilience

When households have more stable food and income options, they are better able to seek medical care, maintain treatment, and reduce harmful coping strategies during economic stress.

The Livelihood Program is designed to build community self-reliance and resilience through sustainable agricultural development. Health and nutrition are deeply connected to economic independence, especially in border areas where supply chains are vulnerable.

BHDF supports vulnerable communities to launch and maintain household or community-level farming, focusing on food security and sustainable income streams.

Agricultural Development

We provide technical training and resources for sustainable crop cultivation. The program includes:

  • Distribution of seeds, fertilizers, and farming tools
  • Training on pest control and sustainable farming techniques
  • Guidance on crop rotation and soil maintenance

Livestock Support

For households lacking the land for extensive farming, animal husbandry provides a crucial source of ongoing nutrition and secondary income.

  • Provision of livestock (e.g., poultry, pigs, or fish for aquaculture)
  • Training on animal health, feeding, and disease prevention
  • Support with constructing secure pens and enclosures

Community Development

The long-term goal of the Livelihood program is community ownership. By organizing cooperative training and resource-sharing among villages, we help foster local economic networks that can survive beyond external funding cycles and provide a buffer against conflict-related displacement.
